The Adoption and Children Act 2002, which came into effect fully in December 2005, has considerably changed the law and the legal process in relation to the adoption of children. In particular, the adoption process has become much more widely available so that single people, same sex couples, and older individuals or couples can all be prospective adopters. Naturally the child's welfare is the paramount consideration of the court and adoption agencies, and a welfare check list guides all parties through the investigations and enquiries made during an adoption application to ensure the right decision for the welfare of the child.
